Gather around everyone...
Today we dived straight into a group discussion. We moved the desks out of the way and arranged our seats so that we could sit in a circle. Jimmy prefers that we sit this way because the conversation flows more freely and he doesn't feel like he's teaching so much as he is dialoguing with everyone. We started talking about creative briefs, which is basically the who, what, where, why,and how of a project. Jimmy showed us some advertising pieces from CMYK magazine (it's a magazine that showcases student work) and asked us if we understood what the ideas behind the ads were. There was a lot of confusion, no one really understood the reasons behind the ads, so Jimmy concluded that the ads weren't serving their purpose.
We went through our homework assignment next. We were supposed to pick one image and then write 10 words or phrases that would completely shift the meaning of the image. It was a challenging assignment but I did have a little fun doing it. Once I found an image and came up with one phrase, the others just flowed. As we were presenting our images and phrases, Jimmy said we were missing the mark because we were being to obvious. He said the more farfetched the phrase the better. For example one person brought in a picture of the Real Housewives of Atlanta and Jimmy said that a good headline would be "The starting five for the Boston Celtics". We are going to give it another try and bring in a new image with new phrases on Wednesday. I'm sure, that now we have a better idea of what Jimmy is looking for, there's going to be some outrageous headlines.
It's going to be a really fun class.
