Can you break the code?

You really can get inspiration from anywhere. This morning, as Jimmy was writing down the date, 11/10/10, on the sign-in sheet, he came up with an idea for a group work/communication exercise. He asked if anyone knew binary code, which uses 1's and O's, and when replied we didn't, he proceeded to look it up and then write the first 6 lines of binary code on the board. Our job was then to figure lines 7,8,9 and 10. There's about 14 of us in the class and we spent a good half hour discussing and we still couldn't come up with one solid answer that everyone agreed on. I think this was the point of the exercise. Not only were we supposed dialogue and work together as a group, but we needed to really communicate with each other so that we would all be comfortable with the final decision. We needed to go back and forth using different methods and explain our views in a way that everyone would understand which direction we were heading and why.

This is an incredibly important lesson we need to learn for our field. 99.9% of the time we are going to be working in groups to come up with ideas and solutions for projects. It's really important that we learn to communicate our point of view and be able to explain it in a way to our peers so they can follow your rational and then decide to agree or disagree. There is no way the project is going to be 100% successful if the entire group presents a final decision, but there are still those who are confused or not in agreement...
